Outer spherical ball bearings are a specialized form of deep groove ball bearings, distinguished by their spherical outer ring surface, which fits into a matching concave spherical seat to achieve self-alignment.

These bearings are designed to carry combined radial and axial loads, with radial load being the primary component. They are generally not intended to withstand axial loads on their own. The bearing can be installed by mounting the inner ring—with its complete set of balls and cage—and the outer ring separately. Because this bearing type does not allow the shaft to incline relative to the housing, any shaft tilt under radial load will create additional axial force. The axial clearance plays a critical role in proper bearing performance: insufficient clearance leads to excessive temperature rise, while excessive clearance increases the risk of damage. For this reason, careful adjustment of axial clearance during installation and operation is essential. When required, a slight interference fit can also be applied to enhance the bearing’s rigidity.
